extras - Over You

This book is about three old friends - Josie, Lisa and Nell - who meet up for a reunion weekend in London. Back in their twenties, the three of them were best mates and flat mates, and life was one long party. Now they're all thirtysomethings and have each gone different ways - Josie is a full-time mum, living in the suburbs; Nell is a free spirit, travelling the world; Lisa has gone for career glory, with the house and designer clothes to show for it.

Josie is really looking forward to catching up with her old friends… but all is not as it seems. And when secrets are revealed, and skeletons tumble out of closets, it feels like her world is falling apart.

I started writing this book after going on a similar weekend reunion in London with my two best friends. Like the characters in my book, we'd all shared horrible flats in the city and had gone through countless traumatic boyfriend break-ups, job-hunting nightmares and landlord battles, as well as many many fab girly nights out (and in!) together. I found it a really strange experience, going back to our old haunts: London felt so familiar yet also surprisingly different from when we'd all lived there. And we were all different too - we had all settled down with long-term partners and children; all more confident and sorted than we ever were as cheeky twenty-somethings.

All sorts of memories emerged from the weekend as we reminisced about the old times… and I couldn't help wondering what would happen if something really shocking came out, that had until then been a huge secret…

That was the spark of the novel and I found it quite hard to write, imagining how I'd feel as Josie, discovering that I'd been betrayed by two people I'd always felt very close to. But I did enjoy writing about the way she gradually picks herself up again and rebuilds her life… and I loved writing the romantic scenes in this one - there wasn't a whole lot of romance in my first novel, Any Way You Want Me, so I enjoyed indulging in that!
